What we collect

When you subscribe to StarsOut alerts, we collect your email address, your location coordinates (latitude and longitude), your city name, and your locale preference. That is all we collect.

Why we collect it

We use your location to calculate nightly stargazing scores based on weather and astronomical data. We use your email address to send you daily alert emails when conditions are good. Your locale preference determines the language of the site and emails.

Where we store it

Subscriber data is stored in Supabase (EU Frankfurt region). We also retain score logs for analytics purposes.

What we do NOT do

  • We do not sell your data
  • We do not share your data with third parties
  • We do not use tracking pixels
  • We do not use cookies for advertising

Cookies

We use a single cookie to remember your locale preference. This is a functional cookie, not a tracking cookie.

Analytics

We use Vercel Web Analytics, run by Vercel, which already hosts this site. It sets no cookies and doesn't identify you across sites. We count page views and a few actions: viewing a city page, starting or completing a signup, sharing, and clicking a gear link. Each count carries only the city, language, a score range and where on the page it happened. Clicks on links in our emails pass through starsout.cc/r, which counts the click (campaign, city, language) in our own database. It doesn't record who clicked. We don't use Google Analytics, ad trackers or tracking pixels.

Email

Emails are sent via Truncus, our email infrastructure. Every email includes an unsubscribe link and a link to your settings, where you can also pause alerts.

Data retention

When you unsubscribe, your email address, locations and settings are deleted right away. If you had also agreed to occasional gear emails, we keep your record for 30 days after you unsubscribe and then delete it. Signups that are never confirmed are deleted after 30 days. After deletion we keep a keyed hash of your email address (not the address itself), so that if someone enters your address again we send at most one confirmation email a week. It is removed if you confirm a new signup. Your answers to "was it clear?" in alert emails are kept to calibrate the forecast, without your email or IP address and with the location rounded to about 10 km plus the city name. Score logs hold coordinates and scores only.
